Intellectual Property: Why it Matters


About this workshop:

Protecting the intellectual property of a start-up and assuring that it doesn’t infringe others’ rights can make the difference between failure and success, particularly in the high tech and biotech fields.  Attendees of this workshop will learn about the types of intellectual property protection available, and how to identify key IP assets in their businesses.  Important considerations for developing an IP strategy will also be presented, followed by an open discussion where you will have the opportunity to ask an IBM IP attorney specific questions relating to your business.

  • Why protecting your IP is important.
  • How to identify key intellectual property assets in your start-up.
  • How to select the most appropriate form of IP for protecting each of those assets:  e.g., copyrights, patents, trade secrets or trademarks.
  • Some important benefits of IP protection to your company.
  • Tips for creating an IP strategy to protect your business assets and avoid infringement claims by others.

Meet Your Instructor:

Ingrid M. Foerster is IP Division Counsel for IBM Watson Health Group, established in April 2015, where she provides guidance on IP strategy and all other aspects of intellectual property support.  Prior to that, she served for 9 years as Division Counsel for IBM’s Big Data & Analytics Division, managing a team of attorneys at Silicon Valley Labs in San Jose, CA.   She began her IBM career as an electrical engineer in the Storage Systems Division.  Prior to that, Ingrid was a database consultant for a small start-up in Basingstoke.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Ingrid graduated with distinction from Illinois Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Computer Engineering, including a year abroad attending Robert Gordon Institute of Technology in Aberdeen, Scotland.  She earned her law degree in 1993 from Santa Clara University, and finished her degree at Oxford University (Magdalen College).
