Explorations of Data in Python: Veterans Day Edition (11.9)

In honor of Veterans Day, Galvanize is hosting a special free workshop for those who serve or have served in the armed forces. This introductory course in Python for data science will provide aspirational learners with the tools necessary to help them get started on their learning journey. By the end of the course, anyone with a curious and analytical mind will be better acquainted with one of most prolific and in-demand careers in technology today.

This is a beginner workshop. This workshop does not require programming experience, but some background on Python would certainly help. Participants who are familiar with concepts of data analysis and statistics will be better equipped to apply their skills after the conclusion of the workshop.

How to Prepare

Please bring a laptop with charger to this course. 

Install the following:

– Python 2.7 or 3.5 
– Git (should be okay if you have a Mac) 
– Anaconda for Jupyter Notebooks

6:30 pm – Networking & Announcements 
6:40 pm – Setting up environments (Python, Anaconda, Git)
7:00 pm – Learn basic Python commands for data science
7:30 pm – Data wrangling and analysis in Pandas
8:00 pm – Data visualization in Matplotlib
8:15 pm – Wind down, sandbox & Q&A 
8:30 pm – HARD STOP

What You Will Learn

  • Launch, run, and modify a Jupyter notebook

  • Learn some basic data science commands in Python

  • Use Pandas to clean and analyze a dataset of Hotel Receipts

  • Use Matplotlib to do some cool visualization
