Data Science in the Academy, the Industry, and the Wild

July 26, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Data science is one of the fastest growing industries in information technology, yet its origins derive extensively from the rigors of academia. Moreover, data science is inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs that hope to tackle the problems that lie deep within the vast ocean of data being produced. How might the experiences of the academy, industry, and entrepreneurship – often kept demarcated in most contexts – inform and inspire one another?

To put it more simply, what can we learn from the experiences of data scientists in the academy, the industry, and the “wild” of entrepreneurship? What might they learn from each other?

This Meetup features three data scientists with experience in all three to discuss the state of the field of data science and explore each path with respect to their corresponding circumstances:

  • Daniela Barga – co-founder and chief data scientist of DefinedCrowd.
  • Crystal Humphries – Galvanize data science fellow and former Institute for Systems Biology postdoctoral fellow
  • Rutu Mulkar-Mehta – professor at Northeastern Solutions and founder of Ticary Solutions.
